A pretty little Chinese parable someone emailed me yesterday:
For a full two years this went on daily, with the bearer delivering only one and a half pots full of water to his house. Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments, perfect for which it was made. But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection, and miserable that it was able to accomplish only half of what it had been made to do.
After 2 years of what it perceived to be a bitter failure, it spoke to the water bearer one day by the stream. "I am ashamed of myself, and because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your house."
The bearer said to the pot, "Did you notice that there were flowers only on your side of the path, but not on the other pot's side? That's because I have always known about your flaw, and I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walk back, you've watered them.
For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate the table. Without you being just the way you are, there would not be this beauty to grace the house.

I guess that explains the crack in my butt.
Susan MacRae | July 14, 2003 5:27 PMGood morning, Caterina... wonderful fable!
You wouldn't happen to have a source for that, or a title? It would be wonderful to look into it a little deeper.
It would perfect for a new picture book by Demi, wouldn't it?
vis10n | July 15, 2003 6:47 AMSame story set in India here and here, without geographical locus here (but headed "The Cracked Pot/ By Michael Berman," which I think is a little cheeky) and here (with this intro: "This parable has apparently been around the internet for some time. Come to that, it has probably been around the world for some time! We regret we do not know who originated it or where. Still, it's a good story with a timeless moral."); Google "cracked pot" and you'll find a million of 'em. Be interesting to know where this got started.
language hat | July 15, 2003 7:38 AMI think that this story is one of the staples of the Nightingale Conant set (Anthony Robbins, Wayne Dyer, etc.). I remember hearing it at least 10 years ago on one of my father's inspirational audio tapes.
Marcus | July 15, 2003 9:49 AMI knew it had a suspiciously high self-help tone to it, but I overcame my instinctual fears of that genre and posted it.
Though I still do feel a little bit Angel Affirmation about it.
Caterina | July 15, 2003 3:15 PMawwww! poor crackpot :D
| July 15, 2003 9:00 PMGreat story -- thank you.
Brian | July 16, 2003 4:10 PMI would like to use this parable with the children I teach. Do you know where I can get a picture to go with it ( of a chinaman with water pots hanging on a pole)?
Thank you
I go along with The Alice of Feb 20th. I'm looking for pictures for this awesome story, also To use in our Children Message on Sunday. Thanks You1 Alice Rose
