Having gotten used to the used book stores in San Francisco (not to mention Berkeley), I've been unable to adjust to the comparative dearth of them here. So I've become a dedicated Powell's orderer -- no shipping on orders over $50 to anywhere in North America. I was happy as a brand new balloon today to receive in the mail:
- A Heart So White by Javier Marias. I just finished the excellent Tomorrow in the Battle Think on Me and hated for it to end.
- All Souls also by Javier Marias
- The Poems of Algernon Swinburne, that schmoopy, overemotional fellow. Still.
- Austerlitz by W. G. Sebald. Because the hardcover was on sale, and I've been wanting it.
My opportunities for reading seem to have diminished lately, as have my opportunities for posting here.

You will love A Heart So White. It's a wonderful book.
Clare | August 22, 2003 12:08 PMJust curious, Caterina, why you order books from Powell's when you link to Amazon? What is the advantage of Powell's? (I even live here in Portland, and although I occasionally buy from Powell's store in person, I order from Amazon online because the books are almost always cheaper and shipping is free over $25.)
Emily | August 22, 2003 12:34 PMAmazon doesn't ship free to Canada, and usually the price for used books is lower on Powell's. If I am going to buy a new book I usually order it from Amazon, since yes, their prices are lower. I sometimes buy used books from Amazon Z Shops, but again, shipping to Canada is exorbitant and Canadian Customs extorts $5.00 on each package for the privilege of charging you tax.
I link to Amazon because after spending many hours trying to set up my Powell's Associates thing, I still couldn't get it to work, and they weren't very helpful at all. I have the process for linking to Amazon memorized at this point and have never had a problem with it.
I don't bother with Amazon.ca -- their stock is as pathetic as their prices. I did several shopping cart by shopping cart comparison of Amazon.com, Amazon.ca and Powells.com and Amazon.ca lost every time. If Powell's doesn't have what I'm looking for, I often order from abebooks.com.
Caterina | August 22, 2003 2:00 PMHave you ever tried alibris.com? They have free shipping also over $50 on books, as long as they were bought from alibris rather than an independent seller. I used them once and thought they were pretty good. You can also search for first editions and rare books with them aswell.
clare | August 22, 2003 2:36 PMThanks for the clarification! I didn't know those shipping particulars.
Emily | August 22, 2003 3:56 PMI bought "The Rings of Saturn" by W.G. Sebald yesterday. Stream-of-consciousness meets travel book. Strangely compelling.
Richard | August 22, 2003 11:54 PMHey Cat -- Johnnyboy here with a suggestion....prose-poetry book by a friend about a Filipino boy who thinks he can fly:
Names above Houses, Oliver de la Paz
looks like Powell's has it. :)

| August 23, 2003 8:50 AMwhen i went to school we watched a number of documentaries about the holocaust, which still sits heavy and familiar in my family history. Austerlitz is one of the two books that have done more to make me think about that time than any others. More than all those precise, necessary histories, the weight of the text in that book brought home to me a lot of the pain, without the slow glazed shock i fell into during most of my previous attmepts to read the holocaust literature. Inga Clendinnen's Reading the Holocaust was also sharp and clear for me, but it might have been just where i was at then. I'd love to hear your comments on austerlitz.
em | August 25, 2003 12:19 AMcaterina, have you checked out the used bookstore on columbia street in New Westminster, Booktown? My brother used to work there and apparently it has a great selection - the owner can keep a look-out for titles for you as well, I think.

There's a decent article on Marias in the latest Believer magazine.
