Allow me to hurriedly paint myself in the Amis fanclub corner.

I took a class on Amis and Ian McEwan in school as representatives of a certain strain of 'enfant terrible' UK male writers. (This was a shaky claim to me, even in '95.)

Amis first came to me like a revelation. I read Money when I was in high school, and it spoiled me for a good lot of other stuff that would have otherwise held my interest. Phooey on that.

That said, I think Amis' themes and concerns have passed. His grab in the 90s at Big Themes was a welcome departure from all the 80s stuff (nuclear winter n' sex-fixated), but I think, The Information notwithstanding, he has fallen on the shoals. I agree with Fischer's basic points, and found Experience (and even the Stalin book) to be wildly overrated. Amis is not even pumping out essays right now--though I was amused by his belated profile of the pornster Stagliano in the NYer a few years back.

I blame our arid times (more than him) for not having his voice pop up with more regularity. Needless to say, he still does not get the respect due him from the establishment, particularly back in the UK.

I think Amis' problem is an interesting, almost tragicomic one: a massive talent in search of a theme deserving his touch.

He's a brilliant son of a brilliant man, which makes pisses people off. He's misogynistic when he thinks about it. He had horrid english teeth and had the nerve to have them fixed.

I've never seen the teeth of Martin Amis, not even in a photo, certainly never on the page. I've seen pictures of him in that 60's/Edwardian velvet smoking jacket though. I thought "Time's Arrow" was a pretty strong collegiate exercise, exorcising, cathartic, with a lot of real emotion underneath it.
But that one where the guy's a family man? Being stalked by the grosse Untermensch in the van? The book takes on a dilemma that a lot of middle-aged guys need worked out: the comfort and protection and hypocrisy of the cultural sell-out versus the danger and animal competition of lawlessness and anarchy. But he never seems to get past just wanting them(lower-class losers, petty criminals, bad people) to go away. It's a moral conflict resolved with petulant sarcasm.

I actually like Martin Amis, teeth and all. I did two papers on 'London Fields' in University and thought 'Time's Arrow' was unforgettable. He may describe icky things and icky people, but I think that he's not a misogynist at all, nor a class snob. Just a damned good writer who makes you uncomfortable about the things he writes about. As any damned good writer should. So yes, I'm looking forward to 'Yellow Dog', though perhaps I should have some nice & fluffy chicklit lined up right after that.

Actually, it's not out, it's coming out next month, and -- by a wild coincidence -- Tibor has a book coming out the same day. I would take his vitriol with several bushels of salt. He's plainly jealous of Amis's success, and quite rightly; for all his occasional flashes, and for all Amis's (ever more frequent) lapses, Amis is ten times the writer he'll ever be. (The Stalin book is just silly, though. Get a grip, Martin.)

An interesting bit in the NYT states that Amis' latest book concerns itself with envy and that Fischer's piece may be an elaborate riff on the novel's main theme. In that case, what a brilliant homage!

But, I must agree, Amis has lost his touch a bit. He's spending too much time burried in his thesauras and not enough observing behavior other than his own.

Thesaurus. Perhaps I should spend more time in the dictionary.

Ugh - people are so ambivalent about Amis because he has let some absolute dreck be published because, well, they can. Time's Arrow was an overblown writing exercise, an etude at best that should never have seen the light of day. Dreck! Other work has been very very good - but too often, his publisher just goes with whatever he has at the moment, quality and editorial judgement be damned!

i loathe him because they feel that if he weren't so blindingly overconfident in himself and in his understanding of human nature, he'd be truly brilliant. also because his obvious intelligence is so seductive, in that it makes people doubt their own ability to observe and understand human interaction.

he's like a dark jedi! i haven't read his more recent stuff though.
