One of the unexpected delights of my quick trip to Lightning Field in New Mexico was meeting poet Regan Good and her travelling pal and fellow poet Jason, (who isn't trying to pull a Cher, I just didn't catch his last name.) Faithful Google turns up some lovely poems by Ms. Good, which in their passion and danger go perfectly with the tangos I'm listening to this morning.
A week and a half ago, Julie called me to see if I were ready to go on a secret mission Tuesday night. She wouldn't tell me why or what for. I love secret missions! As it turned out, we were going to see The Gotan Project, which Julie had played for me New Year's Eve in Tofino, and which I loved, but she wouldn't tell me who they were. Passion and danger! I love tangos. And all the sexy men in their striped suits. And the torch singer with her long dark eyelashes and disdainful sneer. All the Latin beauties were out that evening.
The Gotan Project is a melding of Tango and Electronica, and the musicians hail from Paris and Buenos Aires, of course. Tango started at the turn of the century in the brothels of Buenos Aires, but was considered too scandalous for polite society, until it was popularized in Paris. "Gotan" is Verlan for Tango. When I was in Buenos Aires, I was sick the whole time. I never got out to see any tangos. Julie decided we're going down this winter -- their summer -- to see some.

I'm pleased you're interested in the tango. Gotan Project has nothing to do with real tango. It's a commercial venture of sorts. If you go to Buenos Aires you'll get a real chance to see what tango really is. I've been dancing it here in Italy for more than six years and enjoying myself tremendously. Look up my website for some great tango music. The Argentine website www.todotango.com, however, is best for listening to some great stuff and getting endless information.
Gio | October 22, 2003 2:08 AMThere's a bit of a nuevo tango scene here in Austin, with overlapping groups like string quartet Tosca, composer/pianist/accordionist Glover Gill, and cabaret act 8-1/2 Souvenirs. I have no idea how they compare with the Gotan Project or with "real" tango, although there have been some Austin-Buenos Aires collaborations if that means anything.
Does every hipster town have tango action these days?
I was surprised not long ago to learn that the roots of tango are Afro-Argentinean and have some interesting parallels with ragtime in America.

When you decide to come to Buenos Aires, please contact me.
Because I am not a Tango fanatic, I could contact with many friends of me, and you could see the Tango underground scene, NOT the one performed for tourists.
And of course, you will go to some places where itīs free (or cheaper).
When I travel, I like to go to these kind of places, where the people of the city goes, the cemeterys, the public places, and so on.
Truly yours
Dr. Edward Furio

The Gotan Project is great, but after a few days, I find myself metally stuck in infinite loops of accordian that never coalesce. I would love to see them live! How were they?
