A request

If you have any clothing you are throwing out or giving away (or even if you're not) would you do me a favor and cut the labels out of them and send them to me? I am trying to make a dress that is contructed entirely of labels for a show at the Helen Pitt this coming spring. I've cut all the labels out of my own clothes, and they aren't nearly enough. I can only make a little doll-sized dress.

I'm also considering knitting a dress of hair, but I'll let you know about that one later. I might be able to get some hair from a salon or something.

an artist friend of mine, who works in textiles, made an amazing full size quilt out of just clothing labels. I wish i had had the money to purchase it. It is/was just so beautiful and so pleasing to the eye. It is now owned by a private collector.

Caterina,

Thrift stores often hold "bag sales" where they sell entire bags of clothing for $5 or less. You could purchase these bags, cut the tags out of the contents, and donate them back again sans tags, writing them off of your taxes.

It's been done before. Back in the late 1980s, some of the Jacquard-loom label companies in the Los Angeles Garment District produced shirts made entirely of labels. They had a huge advantage because being the label manufacturer, they could create custom-made long strips of uncut labels. That made it a lot easier, they just sewed together the strips, they didn't have to sew together hundreds of individual labels.

Anyway, I suggest you go find the nearest label company and go dumpster diving.

I think that's a great project! I've been collecting the labels off of my clothes since I was 15! I don't have many (not a clotheshorse). I ask all of my friends if I can remove the labels from their clothes. Most of them, after giving me "the look," let me go ahead and remove them (because they're itchy). I'm saving mine for a quilt. I ought to have enough by the time I'm ninety or so. Good luck!

I used to wear shirt back in the early eighties, it was an "Izod" you know with the little aligator logo. Well I got it for about a buck and a half when they were going for 35$ in the retail stores>
