Too Pretty



I haven't been able to muster much enthusiam for All the Pretty Horses since I realized that John Grady/Matt Damon was going to, of all things, fall in love with Alejandra/Penelope Cruz. In a Cormac McCarthy novel?! I suspect McCarthy started taking Prozac before writing this thing. Gone are the dark malignant characters, the bad conscience, the vermiculate prose: all those things you pay the $13.95 + tax for. Are all three books of the Border Trilogy like this?

I've never read any other McCarthy, but did read All the Pretty Horses for our book group. I rather liked it, though some parts were better than others. It took a long time for me to find the right groove from which to read the book.



In the end, I argued, unsuccessfully, that John Grady was a pure and noble figure — almost Christ-like. ("See?" I argued. "Even his initials point to this conclusion!"). He's not perfect, to be sure, but his intentions are good. 



My argument fell on deaf ears.



I became that month's token "person who will not let a point die" member of the group. One woman in the group disagreed with me. Vehemently. She thought John Grady was a disgusting womanizer of a man with no redeeming features. Further, she thought that the women in the novel were completely unrealistic and were written as if they were men. She couldn't believe the romance. It didn't feel real to her. 



She and I argued for the better part of an hour (in real life, we're very close friends), while the rest of the group sat around, drinking wine, growing more glassy-eyed with each heated word.



To this day, that argument, and that book group discussion, is held up as an example of what our book group ought not to be like. 



But I still say I was right.

I can't bring myself to read it either, even though I loved Blood Meridian.  Now that was a fantastic read: dark, twisted, violent and apocalyptic. 



Although I must admit that the title "All the Pretty Horses" has a colloquial ring that intrigues me.  It carries with it an assumption of shared understanding that might draw me into the book someday.  (When memories of the film finally dissipate.)

Well, Caterina it was your post a year or so ago concerning Blood Meridian that ignited my interest and now I'm three shy of reading all his works. If Blood Meridian left you breathing heavily on floor, Sutree will throw you across the room and leave you rocking back and forth in the fetal position. Less violent, more drunk and depraved.



Seriously, dont bother any more with the trilogy. Head straight to Sutree for a heavy literary workout, then cooldown with Outer Dark.

Yeah, I'm with you Michael. I've read everything the guy has written, except The Border Trilogy, and they all knocked me out. 



But not this one. "The Crossing" someone says below, is the one. Anyone read all three?

Have to second everyone who mentioned Blood Meridian.  Even the title has embedded itself so deep in my psyche that I cannot look at a spectacular sunset without feeling malice.  Thankfully I live nowhere near arroyos or dustplains or I'd have to live in constant fear and anxiety.

One of your past commenters, Michael is correct. Sutree is the best. I know writer William Gibson and he told me how years back he was in East Berlin (when there was a wall). Instead of venturing out to explore he stayed in his hotel turning the pages of Sutree. I try to stay away from trilogy books (like most movies) they usually disappoint. But I am not against reading books that have characters that grow from one to the next. Some examples are Dumas and the musketeers, Patrick O'Brian with Aubrey and Maturin, Reginald Hill with his Pascoe and Dalziel, Jerome Charyn and his pink commish Isaac Sidel or the wonderfully good but almost unknown J. Robert Janes and his French and German cop partners during German Occupied Paris.

Caterina, I have read all three but it has been maybe ten years. Of the three, The Crossing (the 2nd) was the best by far. I remember thinking also that ATPH was an interesting but light read. The Crossing is not only darker but also more lyrical; I recall reading passages out loud that struck me as particularly beautiful. The third, Cities of the Plain, was extremely dissapointing.

Re All the Pretty Horses and the Crossing. These I read and I stopped. Both books have a charm for me from the fact that I lived in Northern Mexico near Eagle Pass, Texas in the late 50s and I was educated in Austin in the 60s. It is known that McCarthy made it a point to live in El Paso so as to learn Spanish. The Spanish in his books is accurate and accurate to the kind of Spanish spoken in Northern Mexico. These novels rang true to me and gave me lots of nostalgia. One of the few American Westerns that did not butcher Mexican Spanish was Sam Pekinpah's The Wild Bunch. We can only guess what Pehinpah may have done with something like Blood Meridian.

For all of you who have not read ATPH because of the love story, do yourselves a favor and read it. The movie emphasizes the love story but their is so much more to the book so please do not deprive yourselves of a great read. My favorite Cormac books are Bloob Meridian and Suttree and I still loved ATPH though The Crossing is clearly the best of the trilogy. Everything Cormac has written is brilliant in it's own right so you really can't go wrong. By the way Cormac's new book is supposed to hit the shelves in August and be set near modern day Eagle Pass, Texas, my home town.
