Via Witchy Canuck I found this amusing Ethical Philosophy Selector and was not surprised by the results:
- Nietzsche (100%)
- David Hume (87%)
- Thomas Hobbes (86%)
- Jean-Paul Sartre (80%)
- Stoics (75%)
- Epicureans (70%)
- Ayn Rand (63%)
- Spinoza (56%)
- Cynics (54%)
- Aristotle (46%)
- John Stuart Mill (38%)
- Plato (38%)
- Aquinas (38%)
- Kant (38%)
- Prescriptivism (36%)
- Nel Noddings (32%)
- Jeremy Bentham (32%)
- Ockham (19%)
- St. Augustine (17%)
There is a link explaining each philosopher, and Nietzche is summed up thusly:
- We have free will
- There is no God
- Social conformity should not hold us back
- The interests of others should not restrain us
- We should be passionate beings
- Masculinity, strength and passion are the highest qualities in a person
- Conventional morality is a crutch to man
He sounds like a bit of an asshole, but what can you do (runs off to Google Nel Noddings...)

ricardo | January 27, 2004 12:26 PMI came up with 100% Aquinas and 99% Stoics. The Stoicism result is about right. The rest of my results are here.
Daniel | January 27, 2004 6:15 PMi'm pleased to say i'm 100% epicurean, and pleasure for me appears to be the ultimate moral end.
WOO

I really know next to nada about philosophers and their philosophies, *except* for Sartre. I wonder if my knowledge of his belief system had anything to do with my results?
I'm a Thomist today, it seems.

I usually think of myself as being more Stoic, but maybe I'm less disgruntled than usual right now.
My theory about Nel Noddings is that she's an affirmative action token (since having Ayn Rand as sole standard-bearer is clearly not good enough). What happened to Buddha and Confucius and Zoroaster and...?
Rich | January 28, 2004 2:03 PMI got Sartre and Aristotle #1 and #2, and Ayn Rand #3. Very weird result. It still doesn't mean I'm going to re-read her though. That's a devoir best left to the 18 year olds I think.
Michael | January 28, 2004 7:50 PMQuite disappointed. I was going for 100% Nietzschean (since 100% Wittgensteinian would be impossible (he would refuse to speak of such things)) but came out 100% Sartre and only 89% Nietzsche. The Sartre part is ok but 95% Ayn Rand ("Moral standards are objective, and can be known rationally") is positively scary and completely incompatible with anything but 0% Nietzschean.
Anonymous Coward | January 30, 2004 11:28 AMhmmm, on masculinity... I think that women who are in touch with it can be the most interesting types. & no, I'm not talking about dykes. heil Nietzsche. hehe.
shdwphyre | February 10, 2004 9:52 AM100% Bentham, 92% Mill. I can't say I'm surprised.

I didn't think I would like Hume just based on the name but the little description was good for me and his ideas have seemed to have stood up or else why would I have them. Oh, I'm glad Bentham is down there for me. I can't stand that guy. I like nel noddings. Who is she?
