On a scale from one to cool, Barabas was probably cooler than Jesus. Setting myself to the task, I couldn't think of a single person who was cool and also good. Cool is generally associated with bad or morally ambiguous. And the coolest people are always nuts, drunk, have an untoward propensity for leather, and occasionally veer completely out of control. Say, Kate Moss or Vincent Gallo. I can't think of any cool do-gooders. Bono is a rock star AND a do-gooder. Is Bono cool? Was Bono ever cool? Bono is, I think, not cool and never was. But then, was Anton LaVey cool? Unfortunately, sadly, probably. Even though he was more evil than bad, he was cool.
The idle brain is the devil's playground. And on the subject of evil, the other night I invented a game:
- Which is more evil, thief or robber?
- Thief
- Correct!
- Which is more evil, correct or right?
- Correct
- Which is more evil, tincture or stain?
- Stain
- Which is more evil, nagging or harping?
- Harping
- Which is more evil, ground beef or hamburger?
...and so on

Bono isn't cool? I was sort of aware that my cool-radar isn't that great, but this news plunges me into black doubt...
marrije | November 4, 2005 12:08 AMWell, Jesus, thats a tough one ;-) Taking that seriously for a moment...
Going out on a limb here but I'd say that do-gooders cannot, in general, be equated with good small-scale behaviour. They go for a very certain kind of "goodness". Principles, saving the world, etc. I don't know too much about Bono, but the "good" thing he's famous for is along the same lines, I guess.
"good" behaviour on a small-scale, towards the people around you, well, I can think of some people who do that and are cool.
ingo | November 4, 2005 1:51 AMWhat about the Fonz... now he's COOL!
right?
Just a slight digression, from cool to idleness.
'Idleness is the beginning of all psychology. What? could psychology be -- a vice?' [Nietzsche, Twilight of the Idols]
- which is more evil, gel or hairspray?
- gel!
Hmmm. If something is (bland enough to be?) widely admired, it is not cool (because it no longer interests the socially brave and adventurous people who find and appreciate things before the rest of us catch on and who, by liking something, make it cool) and it is not bad (because it does not offend many people). Or something like that.
But being bad does not make something cool and being cool does not make something bad. I don't follow trends much, but don't very silly, harmless things sometimes become cool? And aren't some very bad things very uncool?
Bono is good (his heart and money are in the right place) but he is not cool because he stopped being new and interesting about a hundred years ago.
eeksypeeksy | November 4, 2005 9:19 AMcomments fields are the evilest. Please keep them up (on? whatever)!
estee | November 4, 2005 10:37 AMCool means knowing "wtf", and being unfazed. Since we are generally a reactive worrying bunch, and we think we're "good" people, then yeah, naturally the cool folks are evil.
Dennis | November 4, 2005 11:00 AMleaving comments on- cool!
dealing with comment spam- evil!

Ron | November 4, 2005 9:17 PMWhat would Marshall McLuhan say?
jmv | November 4, 2005 10:51 PMBono's not cool? To me, he's the paragon of it. Not only does he have the natural aura of it (and let's face it--cool really is all about the aura; it's what separates the legitimately cool people from those of us without it, who compensate in vain through our blogs), but he's a fucking rock star. I mean, if being the world's biggest rock star doesn't make one cool, what can? What's bigger than the biggest rock star? The Pope, maybe, but he's sure as hell not cool in my book (JPII, sure, but Razi is about as cool as a stale sandwich left in a warm kitchen for a week). Nor is George Bush or the Queen of England or Bill Gates cool. Darth Vader is cool, and he's certainly bigger than Bono, but he loses significant cool points when he punks out his boss at the end of Jedi. But I digress.
Going back to Bono, in addition to being a rock star, he's also dedicated his life to fighting Debt, AIDS, trade, and Africa (or at least a solid two out of those). And if fighting isn't cool, I don't know what is (in fact, after I get typing this comment, I'm gonna go pick a fight with the conjoined twins down the street).
Ms. Caterina, I think you're simply a Bonophobe. You don't like that Bono can help fight AIDS and have an ass that doesn't quit. And that's a shame. No one ever dismantled an atomic bomb by hating on Bono.
Bob | November 5, 2005 1:39 AMI thought a thief just quietly takes your stuff, while a robber threatens to knock your teeth out unless you hand it over. As in "help, I'm being robbed!"
And Bono is evil for having flagrantly ripped off the Supremes for the breaks in Vertigo. Evil, evil, evil.
Rich | November 5, 2005 3:07 AMGeorge asked me, "Um, is harping what you're doing now by asking me these questions incessantly even though you clearly see I'm more interested in scanning the headlines on the Dredge Report?" I answered, "Could be". To which he replied, "Then, yes, harping is more evil for sure."
(and I thought he didn't want to play)
angelique | November 5, 2005 6:09 PMYour game reminds me of that Laurie Anderson bit about, "Que es mas macho: pineapple or knife?"
And though a pineapple is more macho than a knife, leaving comments on is the machoest of all.
Nathaniel | November 6, 2005 7:52 AMI think, as you did, many people pick the Nordic derived words as more evil, unconsciously... They sound nastier, like the word "nasty"... perhaps many of us Angles have a race memory of vikings...
Which are more evil, vikings or goths?

Bono has never been cool. If you care to check, get a look at the old U2 concert video "live at red rocks", in which he parades about like a fucking retard singing Sunday Bloody Sunday, grandstanding his male-pattern-balding off, and marching with a fucking flag like his concert stage is some sort of Ireland-liberates-Colorado photo op.
Furthermore, a burglar is more evil than a thief. Don't even think about second guessing me on this. It's fucking axiomatic, Jack.
Joe | November 15, 2005 5:56 AMBad is cool because its the bad people who actually allow good, boring people (most of the world) to have anything to be proud about. If its weren't for bad people, good people would just be boring people. And boring is BAD, BAD, BAD. oh no, now I'm in an infinite loop!
YUMIO | November 17, 2005 11:50 AMBono is "a fucking retard singing Sunday Bloody Sunday" ?
I think if you were torn b/w factions of hate, and you reacted by singing your angst, you would win far more 'cool points' than taking a cherry bomb and throwing it at your neighbour.
Uncomfortably, 'violence' and 'cool' are often dangerously intermingled. I do believe when you react to hatred and violence with the opposite of hatred and violence, it goes beyond 'cool'.
But ultimately, to say that someone or anyone is 'cool' is, frankly, fleeting. Coolness, by it's nature, is a state of flux, of public whim, an easily tipped a flight of fancy...
I still say Bono is cool, but remember he did have some really bad hair days...
JMV | November 18, 2005 10:20 PM"I can't think of any cool do-gooders."
Methinks you need to read more comics (or at the very least more Michael Chabon).
Batman, baby, batman.
Real life? Bob Geldorf, Billy Connelly and yes, even Bono make my list.
Adster | November 27, 2005 12:08 AM-Idleness is the holiday of fools.
-Comments on es mas macho, mas Web 2.0.
-I feared the 'Which is more...' game was a diction game, like 'I like green but I don't like blue, I like pizza but I don't like pasta.'

Which is more evil, leaving comments on or leaving comments off?
