Heather made me do it, but since everyone else is doing it, at least I can blend into the crowd.
Four Things
Four jobs I've had:
- Nurse's Aide, nursing home. My mother wanted to teach me compassion, so she got me this job.
- Flunky in dive shop in Arkansas. Yes, Arkansas is landlocked.
- Painter's assistant. Want to live in Manhattan on $5/hr? Ask me how! (When your dad goes to the bathroom, ask the waiter for more bread, stuff bread into backpack, swipe butter only if foil-wrapped.)
- Investment banker. Starving got a little old, so I got a job through a temp agency, where I ended up at a bank. The managing director took me aside and said, "Hey, you're pretty sharp! You could be an investment banker too!" I said No way!. He said I'll pay you a six figure salary. Wo. Color me powersuited.
Four movies I can watch over and over:
- 8 1/2
- Persona
- Chinatown
- Hair
- ...but why stop there?
- Putney Swope
- Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
- Donny Darko
- The Year Without a Santa Claus
- Gummo
- In the Mood for Love
Four places I've lived:
- Pittsburgh
- New York
- San Francisco
- Vancouver
Four TV shows I love:
- Kill your TV
- Kill your TV: The Sequel
- Kill your TV: The Prequel
- Kill your TV: Cathode Ray Armageddon
Four places I've vacationed:
- Pampanga
- Aleppo
- Montevideo
- Negril
Four of my favorite dishes:
- Margarita Pizza from Delfina Pizzeria
- Raw meat
- The kinds of sushi no one else will go near
- Coffee ice cream
Four sites I visit daily:
- Flickr
- Travian
- http://search.yahoo.com
Four places I would rather be right now:
- Paris (Madame Bovary: "She wanted to die, and she wanted to live in Paris.")
- Tokyo
- West Indies
- Istanbul

Nice list, but... raw meat?!
Dino | January 28, 2006 3:19 AMSo..how long did the investment banker gig last? Was it as painful as it sounds?
Craniac | January 28, 2006 7:59 AMI am reading here: "I didn't want to post this in first place (it's Heathers idea) but I really want to tell you how special I am: I know how it is to be poor, even turned down well-paying jobs and do things "no one else will go near". Maybe it should also read: 4b. Sold Flickr to Yahoo, cashed in, don't have to do these jobs anymore.
olaf | January 28, 2006 8:26 AMAnd I thought I was the only person in the known universe who had seen Putney Swope! ;-)
Jack | January 29, 2006 5:38 AMIt's true! I don't have to do any of those jobs any more. But I will never regret building Flickr, and selling toYahoo! and I'd never call it 'cashing in' or 'selling out'. That's when you do something you hate doing just for the money, and that's what I was doing when I was working (for only 6 months, to answer another person's question) on Wall Street, and hating every minute of it. Also, I figure this is my blog, and I therefore have license to talk about myself as much as I want.
Raw meat? I love Steak Tartare, Carpaccio, yum yum yum.
And yes, Marrije, I will consider flipping the comments back around the other way. It's starting to annoy me too!!
Caterina Fake | January 30, 2006 12:29 PMWhy do you want to live in Istanbul?
Anona | January 30, 2006 11:05 PMI'm not sure I'd want to live there, just be there right now. I'd have to spend a little more time there to know if I could live there or not.
Caterina Fake | January 31, 2006 2:59 AM"just be there right now"
Well they just had one of the worst snow storms in recent memory last week and winters are not terribly pleasant there. September is a lovely stretch though.
You'd have a great time living there. Working is a whole different matter, if you're used to the pace of, say, NYC.
Anona | January 31, 2006 4:35 AMI just *knew* you would have vacation places that I've never heard of... ;->
Dick Costolo | February 1, 2006 9:52 AMDick Costolo, is Negril one of the places of which you haven't heard? Caterina, when Mr. Amy and I decided to go to Jamaica, we looked at pictures with "Jamaica" tags on Flickr and that was one reason we chose Negril.
I found the Negril combination of relatively-rich tourists and locals who hawked merchandise all day on the beach depressing, but I hope you liked it. The ocean clarity and warmth and number of fish was amazing, and Jah Freedom Recording Studio/Palazina Records was pretty cool too.
Amy | February 1, 2006 10:10 AM"The kinds of sushi no one else will go near"
Would that include >>gasp
GraceD | February 1, 2006 9:04 PM"The kinds of sushi no one else will go near"
Would that include...gasp...sea urchin?
GraceD | February 1, 2006 9:05 PMThat dive shop in Arkansas wouldn't have been in Hot Springs would it?
Broch | February 8, 2006 4:30 AMYou lived in Pittsburgh? Why, & for how long, & when?? (I went to Pitt & was totally enchanted by Pittsburgh: winding little streets through Polish Hill, graffiti along the busway, the Carnegie Library's open stacks, the Carnegie Music Hall's secret hiding place in the basement (where in 1893 Andrew Carnegie commissioned a music hall to be built with two spiked towers on either side, but when it was finished decided it was too small and in 1897 commissioned ANOTHER music hall to be built right on top of the first one--leaving the old one standing in many places, with the new one just *looking* bigger. There's a part in the music hall where you can stand between the walls and see the outside of the old music hall rising up into the blackness, & the rough brick inside of the 'new' music hall about an armspan away). Also the strange architecture downtown where a flood 90+ years ago had washed away Grant St (which is why the buildings all get much more on the outside at the second floor--what's now the ground floor used to be basement-level!), the Strip District, the Armstrong Cork Building, the 54C, the city steps...).
Wow, I get carried away. Putney Swope is one of my favorite movies.
