Linkin Log
  • According to the Pew study on Social Ties, things aren't nearly as bad as Robert Putnam, author of the influential Bowling Alone, would have it.
  • I was going to link to a bunch of articles on BLDG BLOG, but why don't you just go and see them all yourself. (via Matt)
  • America in Color: 1934-1943. There's something really striking about the people in this photo, in particular, the girl with the curly hair. Everyone else in the family is wearing exactly the same expression, and looking directly at the camera, but not only does her hair not match anyone else's, she's looking off as if she's posing for another photographer off to the side.

First time commenter. *wave* Also a Pittsburgher.

Anyway, it's also possible the girl is a little slow, as well.

The rest of the family sort of break my heart, too. They look like they could be neigbours of mine, especially the youngest children, they could be in my sons' school. But they live in that cardboarded up house with the one pretty lady on the wall, and their mother looks so tired... The effort that must have gone into ironing the dresses alone must have been huge.

I've actually been to Pie Town, New Mexico. It's right next to where the Lightning Field lives. A like family is probably living there still, but most likely in a trailer home.
