The jolly cock crawis;
Now shroudis the shawis

The thissel-cock cryis

Now skaillis the skyis;

The fieldis ouerflowis
With gowans that growis,
Quhair lilies like low is
As red as the rone.
The turtle that true is,
With notes that renewis,

Conform to their kindis,
Hie tursis their tyndis
On ground quhair they grone.

"Skaillis" means "clears" and the hardest part "Hairtis with hindis" means "harts with hinds" -- deer -- and the "tursis their tyndis" means "carry their antlers". A Hurchonis is apparently a hedgehog, and since night is just about over, they're all happy, nuzzling up to their hedgeladies and going along two by twosies twosies like the elephants and kangaroosies roosies of yore. And the happiness, you see, by the end of the poem, comes after a long night of fierce battle, which makes it all the sweeter.
I love this poem so much I want to eat it. Here's the rest of it..

Have fond memories of watching my dad translate Beowulf and recite poems out of old(e?) and middle English. This immediately reminded me of grade school, watching him animate verse in the middle of our living room. Thanks!

Like lots of people in Canada, my grandparents spoke some "braid scots", their parents being the last ones to speak Gaelic easily. Until I came across a bible written in it, I hadn't thought of it as a "legit" language -too bad for me. Great poem, and brought back good memories of the old people. Thanks
