-- Henry David Thoreau
Someone said to me once that when you're speaking in a language that is not your native language, you lose about 50-75% of your personality. The same thing could be said for maternity clothes. Talk about drab. And since you don't really want to spend a lot of money on clothes you're only going to wear for three months, you're not only drab, you're wearing the same thing over and over again.
I've taken to wearing flashy necklaces to offset the sad L.L. Beanness of my new wardrobe. And then a friend nodded knowingly and said: "I had a friend who wore big, noticeable necklaces when she was pregnant. She wanted to draw attention to her new, impressive boobs." This made me rethink my necklace strategy.
Long ago, I told my sister that if I ever started wearing sweatpants for non-athletic activities, she'd have to stage a fashion intervention for me. Let's just say, good thing she hasn't been by lately.
UPDATE: Based on my friends' input, I've made The Ultimate Guide to Maternity Clothes. Check it out!

Agreed; H & M was good, as was Babystyle (available online and I believe local to you as well)
I'm at nearly 9 months post-partum of my second (and LAST) child and find it's almost as depressing going the other way. Your maternity clothes don't fit, your pre-pregnancy clothes don't fit, and you don't want to spend money on what you pray is a temporary size. But I can vouch for the fact that once you have that beautiful new bundle of joy in tow, no one will be looking at you anyway, except for Stewart, who will think you look like a goddess even if you were wearing a burlap sack.
So my friend Amy IM'd me after seeing this post and made the following recommendations:
Agent Provacateur -- leopard print maternity lingerie!
Isabella Oliver -- Pretty basic, but not unstylish
TopShop -- in the UK. They have a maternity section, and will ship any amt to the US for 10 pounds.
Congratulations! What great news!
I stretched out my existing wardrobe as much as I could, and tried to find non-maternity pieces (as most maternity clothes either weren't my style at all, or seemed inappropriately expensive). This fashion season seems to be a great one, with all of the empire waist dresses and shirts. If you do opt for non-maternity wear, I'd recommend Anthropologie (for the dresses, especially), and anything Ella Moss. I also love Super Maggie and Threadless for their long t-shirts.
(The wrap dress somewhere in here is also nice: http://www.stockholmobjects.com/miva/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=F34)
Good luck!
Libby | April 18, 2007 9:40 AMcheck out glamourmom tanks for right after. interesting clothes to wear postpartum are nearly as important, once the anticipation ends and the sleep deprivation begins. Enjoy, congratulations, and good luck.
glamourmom rocks -- moya said their tanks were much more comfy than nursing bras -- and also useful for wearing under buttoned shirts which, she said, made breastfeeding at home and pumping at work much easier.
here here for the lack of decent maternity clothes. i shopped for moya during her pregnancy and had the most *difficult* time finding maternity jeans with pockets. she ended up wearing black most of the time and the last 2 months of pregnancy (hot weather in palo alto) was only time i've ever seen her in a skirt :)

I like the bogus accuracy of those figures. It reminds me of the old saying, "did you know that 78.3% of all statistics are made up on the spot?"
Check out Japanese Weekend for stylish maternity clothing - http://www.japaneseweekend.com/. They have a store on Stockton near Powell Street in SF. BabyStyle in Burlingame is also great.
Heidi Voltmer | April 20, 2007 1:23 PMWhen she got pregnant, Cyndi Lauper decided she hated all the hideously girly tent-like maternity clothes so much that she ended up going to a store for strippers and buying lots of tight stretchy things. She looked great! Flaunt the bump!

Do you have H&M near you? They have a small, but very stylish maternity section. (Almost *too* stylish, some pieces.) They were my favorite maternity clothes, very cute, and I'm actually still wearing some of their shirts 4.5 months postpartum ...
