Charles Simic: It's really frightening. People need to read a book on how to be happy? It's completely an American thing.
Deborah Soloman: What advice would you give to people who are looking to be happy?
Charles Simic: For starters, learn how to cook.

I'd also add:
Playing an instrument or singing
Talking with friends
Making babies giggle
It is! A roast chicken, some cripsy roasted potatoes, a simple salad, and a chocolate cloud cake have amazing curative powers. It is a very rare day that can't be completely improved by cooking that meal and sharing it with people I love.
And on sharing:
"If you don't love others you can't cook. People who have no love to share eat poorly, and they don't cook. If you love cooking, you will cook, at whatever level. People who like to be around a table, who like to share -- they'll try to cook, even if it's only an egg. I would much prefer to eat an egg with friends than caviar with strangers."

Oh yeah, cooking is good. Also making things, actually physical things. And touching! I went to the fabric market this morning, and touching all those different surfaces was a *good thing*.
